Ferulic Acid
Ferulic acid is a natural chemical that is found in the cell walls of plants. It is a nice smelling antioxidant, also known as Cinamic Acid. It is one of a number of natural plant chemicals, called phytochemical. Ferulic Acid, extracted from Rice Bran Oil, is one of the most powerful natural anti-oxidants. Many plants contain Ferulic acid, which plays a key role in the plants self preservation mechanism, re-enforcing it’s cellular wall strength and protecting it from microbial damage as well as sun damage. As an antioxidant, ferulic acid will pair with molecules called free radicals. Left untouched, free radicals in the body look for molecules to bond with, often bonding with molecules in cell walls and damaging the cell in the process.
Ferulic Acid also helps extend the stability of other antioxidants like the combination of Vitamins C, and E. Research showed that ferulic acid doubled their photo protective capacity on the skin. It is well known that Vitamin C is very problematic in skin care due to it’s highly oxidative state. There are several factors that must be controlled for topical Vitamin C to be effective. One of those factors is stabilization once it’s exposed to air, or moisture, where Vitamin C quickly oxidizes.
