The polyphenols contained in the pomegranate include significant amounts of tannins, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid. This product contains informationpolyphenols (a combination of taninins, athocyanins and ellagic acid). Pomegranates have been used in medicine since ancient times. The extract of this plant contains many compounds acting synergistically to produce potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
The anti-aging benefits of pomegranate have been clinically shown to include a photoprotective effect on skin cells. Studies reveal that skin treated with pomegranate-derived products show less collagen loss and skin protein breakdown. This may help to maintain elasticity of youthful skin.
Another way pomegranate polyphenols helps to protect aging skin is by facilitating skin repair and promoting new skin cell regeneration for anti-aging effects. Ellagic acid was also shown to inhibit wrinkle formation and skin inflammation caused by exposure to UV rays. Pomegranate extracts are useful for reducing undesired skin darkening. Ellagic acid binds copper, which is necessary for melanin-producing enzymes to act, and thereby prevent hyperpigmentation. Ellagic acid, especially in form of a plant extract, is potent in treating individuals with melasma (pigmented skin spots arising from hormonal causes). Other components of pomegranate are, punicalagins, which were also found to inhibit same enzymes, thus adding to the overall whitening effect.
It also helps maintain collagen levels, both by promoting its synthesis and inhibiting collagen-degrading enzymes. Due to these properties, pomegranate extract has a range of benefits in UV protection – it can be used both to prevent and to reduce sunlight damage (photoageing) after exposure. Furthermore, it is an effective skin whitening agent, used to treat melasma and other hyperpigmentation problems. Finally, faster wound healing is observed when using this extract. Combined with antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to increase collagen synthesis, this makes pomegranate extract beneficial in many aspects of wound care.
Polyphenols, when applied topically, can help to repair damaged skin and restore elasticity to prematurely aging skin. A major skincare application of pomegranate extract is wound care. It is known that this extract promotes wound healing, epithelium regeneration, and increases the concentrations of hydroxyproline, which is an important component of collagen. The extract also has anti-microbial properties against many kinds of bacteria and fungi, while remaining completely safe.
