Reduced Glutathione (GSH) protects the skin from oxidative damages, damages from the sun and other poluutants. It’s sometimes referred to as the “master antioxidant” because it recycles other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. Adding glutathione in anti-oxidant cosmetic formulations greatly enhances the effectiveness of your formulation due to the synergy of the anti-oxidant ingredients. Combinations of antioxidants are synergistic and more effective than a single antioxidant in a product.
A research on GSH on women ages 30-50 showed a significant reduction in melanin. In addition, the skin showed an increase in the moisture content of the stratum corneum, suppressed wrinkle formation and improves skin smoothness. There were no marked adverse effects from from the application of GSH.
GSH binds to Tyrosinase and helps prevent the enzymatic pathways from producing melanin. The second is a much more important role. GSH helps to prevent the activation of Tyrosinase by reducing free radicals in the body that can activate it and cause an increase in melanin production. It’s effective when it comes to whitening the skin quickly, and it’s widely regarded as a safe way to whiten the skin. Simply put, Glutathione works to clear the body of free radicals and toxins that can lead to serious skin problems like hyperpigmentation and melasma, as well as more common ones like sun spots
Mechanism of action
a) direct inactivation of the enzyme tyrosinase by binding with the copper-containing active site of the enzyme
b) mediating the switch mechanism from eumelanin to phaeomelanin production
c) quenching of free radicals and peroxides that contribute to tyrosinase activation and melanin formation
d) and modulation of depigmenting abilities of melanocytotoxic agents.
