Description

DL Alpha lipoic Acid is an organosulphur compound derived from caprylic acid (octanoic acid). DL Apha Lipoic Acid is a co-factor in many enzymes and an essential component of aerobic metabolism. One of alpha lipoic acids’ most well-known biochemical uses is its role in the synthesis of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). These roles form the basis for its use as an antioxidant, which inhibits the production of free radicals that can cause cell damage.

PROPERTIES

Alpha-Lipoic-Acid is a potent antioxidant that is even more powerful than vitamin C (400 times stronger), and significantly increases the effectiveness of  Vitamins C and E. A recent study published in the Global Cosmetic Industry Journal, showed that Alpha-Lipoic Acid, being both water and fat soluble, can effectively fight free radical damage in all parts of your skin cells.

ALA is known to have a proven ability to affect skin cell metabolism, being found naturally in the mitochondria (or energy-producing portion) of every the human cell. Another important factor about Alpha lipoic acid is that as we age, the accumulation of glycated collagen (AGE’s) from cross-linked glucose (sugars) becomes stiff and inflexible, leading to the wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of elasticity of older skin tissue.

Therefore the addition of Alpha Lipoic Acid in skincare products activates a collagen regulating transcription factor called AP-1 that turns on enzymes that consume glycation-damaged collagen, for reduction of wrinkles and scarring.

BENEFITS

DL Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful fat and water-soluble vitamin-like compound.

DL Alpha lipoic acid has been directly linked to skin care as a primary antioxidant that prevents aging and inflammation

DL Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful metabolic substance that has many benefits for skin care, including energy production in skin cells; regeneration of vitamins C and E; inhibiting of the activation of transcription factor NF-kB; reduction of cellular inflammation; stimulation of AP-1, which helps remodel collagen; and protection of the skin from free radical inflammation, including sun exposure.

One of the most valuable characteristic of this product is its ability to penetrate the skin’s surface and the skin cell membrane. Consequently, alpha lipoic acid benefits both the inside and outside of the skin cell because of its highly penetrating properties. DL Alpha-lipoic acid penetrates not only the skin, but the skin cell membrane too, where it can deliver these potent antioxidants at a deeper cellular level.

Polyunsaturated fats, the healthy kind that the skin needs to remain young-looking, is protected from free radicals by alpha lipoic acid. DL Alpha lipoic Acid acts by eliminating the free radicals before they encounter the cell plasma membrane. This important process prevents a very dangerous formation of oxidized fats called lipid peroxides, which damage DNA and activate NF-kB, a proinflammatory cursor to cytokines, such as tumor nectosis factor alpha and interleukins. This kind of deadly damage to DNA transcription, or allowing DNA to give instructions to the cell, is to be avoided at all costs.

DL Alpha lipoic acid also has the ability to smoothen skin tissue by increasing its exfoliating capacity, or the removal of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.

Another great property of DL Alpha lipoic acid, is its potency as an antioxidant which regulates the production of oil glands, as under or overproduction of these glands can cause clogged skin pores.

Alpha Lipoic Acid helps with treatment of puffy eyes and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Skin color is enhanced, and pore size is minimized to give the skin a more polished look. DL alpha lipoic acid was shown to decrease scar tissue in a study performed by Dr. David Genecdov of the International Craniofacial Institute in Dallas, Texas.

Studies have shown in recent times that DL alpha lipoic acid interferes with the internal pathways to hyperpigmentation. Moreover, alpha lipoic acid sets up multiple road blocks to prevent hyperpigmentation. It does this via several processes which include –

  • Anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Reduces expression of the key ranscription factor protein that starts the skin pigmentation process.
  • Decrease enzymes that promote melanin production.

Alpha lipoic acid also increases glutathione production in the body. Gluthatione is produced in the body and is essential for the overall look of the skin. Glutathione Is shown to significantly lighten dark spots. Alpha lipoic acid stops pigment production from UV radiation  better than glutathione which makes it superior to gluthatione in this regard.
