Multipurpose Gel Maker is an easy to use liquid – after mixing with your water phase, the pH is brought to 6 or greater which turns your solution into a gel structure. This can be accomplished with a neutraliser like Sodium Hydroxide or TEA (triethanolamine). (Caution should be taken when using Sodium Hydroxide to neutralise your solution; When mixed properly, there will be none left in the final product). A simpler method is to use TEA where only a few drops are required. Multipurpose Gel Maker not only thickens a product, but will bring stability and texture enhancement. Multipurpose Gel Maker gives a silky feel to your products. By varying the usage level you can create a very thick gel or a free flowing liquid. It can be used to make styling gel, facial moisturizer, sunscreen, shampoo, anti-aging treatment, eye cream, cleanser and scrubs. The active ingredient of Multipurpose Gel Maker is Carbomer, a series of synthetic polymers primarily made from acrylic acid. Although not a “natural” product, Carbomer has no documented safety problems and is listed safe by the Cosmetic Independant Review. The Skin Deep database gives Carbomer a Zero Risk. Because of the way Carbomer works, it is very rare for anybody to have any reaction to Carbomer.
* The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel on the active, Carbomer, has assessed this ingredient as safe to use in cosmetic products. In reviewing acute oral and dermal studies, they determined that carbomers have a low potential for phototoxicity, photo-contact allergenicity, skin irritation and sensitization at concentrations up to 100%.
