Ascorbyl Palmitate is the oil soluble form of Vitamin C also known as Vitamin C Ester, facilitated by bonding with palmitic acid. Because it is oil soluble, and nonacid, it is much more stable than the water soluble form of Vitamin C, L Ascorbic Acid. For this reason it can be used freely in formulation without the oxidation that turns your products brown. The oxidation process of the vitamin L Ascorbic Acid is the same oxidation that turns copper green, apples brown and metal to rust.
Unlike standard L Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate is readily absorbed by the skin where it can combat the free radicals that lead to unhealthy aging skin. Ascorbyl Palmitate is oil soluble which is readily absorbed, reaching into deep skin tissues to deliver the multiple benefits of vitamin C which include the production of collagen, the prevention of wrinkles, and the elimination of the blotchiness that gives the skin an aged appearance.
Although vitamin C is a very powerful vitamin, carrying out a multitude of tasks, ascorbyl palmitate has some advantages over it apart from the solubility difference. Its antioxidant properties are stronger than those of regular ascorbic acid and in fact rival those even of vitamin E, which it also helps to regenerate after its reaction with free radicals, and help to maintain a continuous supply of this powerful antioxidant.
Ascorbyl palmitate is a free radical scavenger. Free radicals include active oxygen species, such as superoxide, *OH, *OOH, etc., and the free radicals derived from the biochemical utilization of oxygen or the prooxidant stimulation of oxygen metabolism, initiate the peroxidation of unsaturated lipids – especially those that constitute bio-membranes. Free radicals are responsible for a host of health problems in humans such as:
Free radicals can also lead to destruction of proteins and nucleic acids, resulting in low cellular activity and deterioration of living functions in our bodies. It is not yet clear whether lipid peroxidation is the main cause of the above mentioned diseases. However, we do know that having a large number of lipid peroxides in our bodies is destructive.
Ascorbyl palmitate protects fats from peroxidation, and can be stored in the body in small amounts. Taking Ascorbyl palmitate together with ascorbic acid seems to be the most ideal combination. This combination allows the body to be flushed with vitamin C at all times.
Ascorbyl palmitate acts synergistically with other antioxidants such as vitamin to boost immunity in our bodies.
Ascorbyl Palmitate is commonly used in the food industry as a natural preservative for oils, vitamins and colors. Ascorbyl Palmitate also serves to regenerate Vitamin E creating a synergy of anti-oxidant activity. The perfect choice for all of your preservative free oils, balms and salves.
